Whether it was the first archeological field trip or just simply the first time discovering a pottery sherd that so impressed me to the art of the prehistoric Mimbres People, I cannot say. Perhaps the willows along the Rio or the scent of campfire hovering over the valley is what keeps drawing me closer in spirit to the “Lost People of the Mimbres”. Indeed they are lost. Lost to museums. Lost from human touch centuries ago. Lost like canyon echos, yet wanting to be heard and seen again. The source of my creative energy comes from the Mimbres Valley, the beautiful designs of the Mimbres People and a calling to bring back new life, new touch and new sharing of the Mimbres art as I express it through my work.

For me, working with Mimbres classic designs is like discovering a once lost treasure. Recreating the intricate patterns from their pottery onto the gourd is a real challenge. Many of my designs are done right on the gourds natural surface which allows the subtle color of the gourd to remain while accentuating the boldness of the black design.

Fortunate are the few museums and collectors who are able to possess true authentic pieces of Mimbres pottery. With that in mind, I create this special collection of gourd art done in such a way as to represent the look and feel of archeological pieces. Never are they exact copies, yet accurate in many details, they are collectable art pieces as well as decorations of distinction.

The Mimbres People depicted themselves often with painted faces and occasionally wearing face masks. Since a lot of the imagery on their pottery was for story telling purposes, such as hunting scenes or spiritual quests or ceremonies, I have combined these aspects to create masks each of which has a story meaning of its own.
